Canceled Practices This Week (10/17/2018 and 10/21/2018)

Hello everyone,

Sorry for the short notice, but I had to wait to see how the day went before I made the final call.  Unfortunately, I'm tied up a bit at work, so I won't be able to get to practice today.  Because nobody will be there to teach, I'm going to have to cancel practice for tonight.

While I'm at it, I also need to let everyone know that, due to the Johnson Cup tournament, we will not have practice this Sunday.  If you do want to get your Kendo fix, you're more than welcome to join in the fun times up in Columbus this weekend.

Keep practicing hard!

Due to some unforseen events, we will have to move our practice tomorrow to the place we used to practice at up to a few months ago. The address to the place is below:

Here's the address for those that don't know:

I will keep everyone posted about any updates, but we should be back at our regular location next week.

Change in Venue For Tomorrow

Instead of having our usual practice in Dillonvale tomorrow morning, I would like everyone to attend the shinpan seminar that's going on in Erlanger.  The text below is from an email that I sent earlier, plus some additional information that I only heard about earlier tonight.

Good evening everyone,

THE SHINPAN SEMINAR IS FINALLY UPON US!!!

This coming weekend, we will be hosting the Zone 4 AUSKF shinpan seminar. The purpose of these seminars is to give proper instruction on how the shinpan (judges) conduct themselves and the flow of tournament matches to provide better quality tournaments. While these seminars are more designed for those that are 3rd Dan and up (the official starting rank of being able to judge tournaments), anyone, regardless of rank and experience, can benefit greatly from the instruction. Anyone that are 2nd Dan and below can still be of great help by providing us with some example matches and situations that we shinpan have to face during a tournament match. There's also the great bonus of a practice after the seminar is over on Saturday and Sunday. For our newer members that don't have bogu, you're still invited to come to watch, learn, and better understand the concept of yuko-datotsu (valid strikes) to help you better understand what the heck we are all talking about when we are giving instruction.

Are you still interested in participating but didn't submit an application on time? No worries! You can still pay $25 per person at the door. While there's a few extra bento boxes (Japanese-style lunches) available, it's best you try to bring your own lunch or make your own food plans for the day, just in case we run out. If you're not able to afford the entrance fee or you aren't experienced enough to participate, you're covered too! Y'all can watch for free and still get some valuable information from listening and watching! The best part of it all is that this is a local event that's taking place at the Griffin Sports complex in Erlanger (near the intersection of I-71/I-75 and I-275), so it's not necessary to get a hotel room or anything!

Because of how useful this seminar will be to EVERYONE and the proximity being close enough for most of us to get to, I'm going to cancel both Kendo and Iaido practice this coming Sunday. Got the itch to do Kendo? Come to the seminar!

If you have any questions about how the event will go or anything, don't hesitate to ask! I've also attached the information about the seminar, just in case you want to know about certain information, such as where it's happening and the time schedule.

******NOTE: It was just revealed to us at the dinner tonight that there will be a brief joint practice before the seminar tomorrow morning at 7:30. While there won't be any practice at the usual location, you can still get some Kendo in.

New Practice Location!!!!

Hey guys,

I just want to inform everyone that our practice location on Sunday has been changed to the following address:

4010 E. Galbraith Road, Cincinnati, Ohio 45236

This is in the same shopping center as IGA, which is located on the corner of Galbraith and Plainfield.

See y'all there Sunday!

Sunday practice information

Copied from an email I sent earlier.

This Sunday, the ECUSKF will be holding a godo-geiko (joint practice) at the College Hill Rec Center from 10AM - 2PM. Because of that, instead of having practice at the usual location, we will go there instead. This particular practice is geared towards the kids that will be fighting in the Junior Nationals this Summer, but that only means that this practice will be harder than what you may have experienced. Regardless, everyone is invited to come and participate or watch.

Club News (8/10/18)

Good evening everyone,

This is yet another email with a lot of announcements, so without further ado...

- Just to remind everyone, there won't be regular practice at the Landen location on Sunday due to the Kentucky(-ish) tournament and promotion exam that's going on this weekend. Whether you plan on participating in the event(s) or not, you all should come if you're free. This is a great opportunity to meet and practice with people outside of those you normally practice with and potientially make some lifelong friendships with people from across the region. And if you practice with new people, that will only help your Kendo grow because you'll be dealing with techniques and fighting styles that you'd likely be unfamiliar with.

- Since this is a tournament that's being hosted by the Cincinnati Kendo clubs, there will be opportunities to help out at the tournament with regards to setup, tear-down and operations. Tomorrow at 8 P.M., several of us will be at the tournament location to help set up the courts and tables for the tournament. If you are able to come, not only will it expedite the setup process, but you'll get to see how tournaments are usually set up. During the tournament day, you'll be able to help with simple tasks like helping the competetors get ready for their matches and time keeping. If you're not sure about how to do any of that, no worries! We'll tell you what to do, and you'll have many people nearby to clarify things for you if you need it.

- I'm not sure if anyone has signed up for the Cleveland Kendo tournament. If you haven't, the due date is the 19th, so y'all should decide quickly! If you are participating, please let me know if you plan on doing the tournament and/or seminar so that I can send them the team roster. There's also an Iaido seminar on Sunday after the exam (the application form is at the bottom of the form). It's run pretty informally, and you don't need to know all of the kata to attend, so everyone should come!

- The membership dues for 2018 are coming up soon! If you want to join in on tournaments and promotion exams, you HAVE to sign up and get your membership number/update your membership. I received an email with more details last night, so expect a forwarded email about that some time tonight.

As always, let me know if you have any questions!

This Sunday's Practice (1/28/18)

*************EDIT***********

There was a change to Ben-sensei's plans so he won't be able to lead practice on Sunday.  Because of this, there will be no practice at all this coming Sunday.

****************************

I'm just sending a notice that there will be no Iaido going on this Sunday since I will be out of town.  I was able to hand off the key to Ben-sensei, so Kendo should go on as normal.  If anything changes, I'll let you know.
